PALAU CALLS FOR GLOBAL REVIEW OF NICOTINE AS NEW PRODUCTS EXPAND
The Republic of Palau continues to lead global efforts to address the rapidly evolving nicotine landscape. Following its historic notification to the United Nations requesting a WHO review of nicotine under the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances, the WHO FCTC Knowledge Hub recently highlighted Palau’s call for a global review as new nicotine products continue to outpace existing regulatory frameworks.
To further explore the legal, scientific, and public health implications of this initiative, ASH convened a global webinar featuring H.E. First Lady Valerie Whipps, H.E. Ambassador Ilana Victorya Seid, Prof. Ghazi Zaatari and Dr. David Chalom. The discussion examines why Palau launched this effort, what it could mean for international drug control policy, and the next steps in the global review process.
