Press Release Below

The tobacco industry is relentlessly targeting women worldwide, using advertisements that portray smoking as glamorous and sexy.

But the truth is far darker: tobacco kills millions, and these aggressive marketing tactics violate women’s human rights.

We Are Taking Action.

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and our global partners are reporting these violations to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tobacco Companies Violate Women’s Rights in Canada, Chile, Japan and New Zealand

Global NGOs Report to CEDAW on Violations of Women’s Rights for the 89th Session Starting Today

WASHINGTON, DC – OCTOBER 7, 2024 – Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) is joined by ASH Canada, the Coalition for Americas’ Health (CLAS), and the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC) in reporting to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) on tobacco companies’ human rights violations.

For the 89th session of CEDAW running October 7 – 24, 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland, ASH, ASH Canada, CLAS, and GGTC have collectively submitted four reports to CEDAW on how tobacco companies violate women’s human rights in Canada, Chile, Japan, and New Zealand.

Tobacco companies violate women’s human right to life, right to health and right to be free from discrimination. Tobacco companies do so by running targeted media campaigns to hook women on tobacco products which are proven to be addictive and deadly.

“By ratifying CEDAW, countries have committed to protecting women’s human rights,” said Kelsey Romeo-Stuppy, Managing Attorney at Action on Smoking and Health (ASH). “Protecting women from tobacco companies is an essential part of protecting women’s rights. We ask the CEDAW Committee to call on countries to uphold those protections.”

Tobacco products kill at least 8 million people every year worldwide.

Governments have a duty to protect their citizens’ human rights and that includes a duty to protect their citizens from bad actors like tobacco companies.

“We stand with our global partners in calling on CEDAW to strengthen protections for women worldwide from Big Tobacco,” said Les Hagen, ASH Canada. “Together, we can strengthen global tobacco control policies and protect the human rights of women and girls.”
