Global Tobacco Endgame Summit Bolsters Momentum
Over the past five years, the concept of tobacco “endgame,” or phasing out the sale of commercial tobacco products, has developed from a fringe idea to a global movement. The number of jurisdictions with endgame laws in place more than tripled in 2024, and 2025 has already demonstrated sustained momentum. As of the end of January 2025, roughly 600,000 people are covered by endgame laws. It is likely this number will increase more than 100-fold in 2025 as South Australia and the United Kingdom adopt endgame policies.
Up to the present, endgame has been a developed-world phenomenon, but interest is strong in lower and middle-income countries (LMICs), which share unique challenges and opportunities. The main purpose of the Global Summit is to foster North-South and South-South collaboration and support in realizing and expanding endgame at the national and regional levels.
The Summit will bring together global endgame thought leaders from academia, governments, intergovernmental agencies and civil society.
