Each year more than 800 infants -- roughtly 1 out of 4,500 -- are born with a variety of very serious metabolic disorders including MCAD Deficiency, VLCAD Deficiency, and other so-called inborn errors of metabolism.
Even though the infant appears to be healthy, these diseases can suddenly cause death, incapacitation for life, and other very serious and expensive health problems.
Now there is a simple test which can be given at birth. It can detect these treatable conditions before a life-threatening event occurs, and they are generally available for less than $25.
Yet, in most states, parents of newborns must ask to have the test performed, or even make the arrangements themselves. Therefore this information could save the life of your child, your grandchild, or a close friend or relative.
As a public service to help parents, grandparents, and friends of newborns, ASH , a 36-year old legal-action charitable organization entirely supported by tax-deductible contributions, has posted this vital information on its web site.
